I won my first door prize! It was a plant. My very first plant. I was not expecting to be a plant parent ever. Now I am. He's an African Violet. I have no idea what I'm doing :D

I never had a plant before, and always viewed them similarly to rocks - they're just there. They just exist. Like they're alive, but not "alive" alive. But this bad boy is an actual living creature and I'm killing him just like all of those carnival goldfish when I was a kid :')

When I brought him home, I learned everything I could about how to take care of him. God is he needy. Specific temperature, specific humidity, too good for tap water, gets upsetti-spaghetti if water touches it's leaves. Also doesn't like too much water. But also also doesn't like being dry for too long. Wants sunlight, but not too much sunlight. Hates when things change. And apparently I'm not supposed to gently pet his soft fuzzy leaves :v

He went from one dead flower the first day, five the second day, ten the third day, and, well, let's just say all of his flowers are at least a little bit crunchy now. I also think he was already overwatered when I got him, so we're starting off in the negatives. I have no heat in my house except for a space heater. I can't run this when I'm sleeping or not home. I love this bitch but he is not going to last until it gets warmer out v.v

What should I name him? c:

That flower looks like an Saintpaulia, doesn’t it?
When I was a university student, I worked part-time at a flower shop, making arrangements and bouquets.
Well, to be honest, the arrangements I made weren’t very popular with women at all...
But anyway, that’s not important. If it is a Saintpaulia, I recall that it’s quite sensitive to both heat and cold.
I’m not sure whether it’s summer or winter where you live, but ideally, you should keep the temperature above 10°C.
Hmm... a name, huh... Let me see...
Since “Saintpaulia” means “small love,” how about combining that with a wish for it to grow strong and resilient, and go with the name “Kratos”?😆
By the way, what does “door prize” mean?

Oh, I thought “African violet” was referring to a color, but it turns out it’s the name of a plant!
In that case, it definitely is a Saintpaulia.
Taking care of it might be a bit of work, but there’s a lot of joy in it too.
Good luck!

A door prize is just what it sounds like, you walk through a door and receive a prize. Generally it is a random number selected and someone at the door counts how many people come in, when that number happens, that person gets the prize. Some people also use 'door prize' when it is that "first 100 people through the door get a special gift".

Thank you for the explanation!
It was the first time I'd ever seen that word, so I thought it might have some other meaning.
So that means it’s used in situations like, “You’re the 100th customer today!” right?
Sounds like a pretty fun event! Though if someone suddenly handed me a potted plant, I’d be happy—but it might be a bit of a hassle if my hands were full! 🤣

Essentially yes it is the same, though the first example (RNG, count the number through the door, win) is what most would call the proper meaning. Big companies usually use "first 100 people" or "100th customer", where as small companies (including events) use the term door prize.

Aeglos - plant name from Middle-earth
plant tips off the top of my head
you can drown the roots of most plants
better to underwater a plant a little bit than over water
plants really need a drain system on the bottom of a pot
potting soil in dead plant pots can spontaneously combust and has burned peoples houses down, cause of a bacteria that grows in it

My mom used to grow african violets. She took part in those events to give away african violets and make like terrariums with the plants for shows. That is the extent to which I paid attention. Lmao

My mom keeps those violets in her bathroom, where there's a skylight. She keeps getting them from all the people who can't take care of them, like a violet orphanage. If you let the soil dry a bit too long and it seems like the water just rushes through, try immersing the bottom of the plant for a minute or two. It helps encourage the soil to hold the water.

Also, remove the wrap, if you haven't already...the pot should (hopefully) have drain holes, otherwise it'll drown the roots.

Name it...Violet? Or...confuse people and name it Chartreuse.

We are not supposed to eat bad food, we are not supposed to get overworked and overstressed, we are not supposed to... etc., etc., yet we are still alive. Dowhat you reasonably can, don't do, what you can't... anyway, it will survive only, if it has a sufficient will to live ;)
