movies are too passive an experience to even think of doing it with friends imo. I avoid movies when I am hanging out with my buddies in favor of playing a video game together (in the same room) playing board games, doing a physical activity such as frisbee or hiking, or even just chilling with them on the patio.
short answer fuck no. infact, thats how it should be. going to movies WITH other people as a SOCIAL activity is pathetic.

I gave my view above but I wouldn't say that either. You can go to see a show on a stage with other people as a social activity and then have a discussion about it...... so why not movies too? Both can be similar forms of a narrative or telling a story.

Because you can have that same conversation later if you both happen to have seen that movie. It is a waste of the time you have to spend together to sit quietly in a room staring at a screen for hours. I could have been playing a board game and talking to my buddies for hours instead of sitting there whittling away the time I have to interact with them.
EDIT: the experience of the story in a movie does not change if you are alone (possibly for the better if you are with a distracting individual) and watching them alone gives you the freedom to watch it on your own schedule rather than trying to sync up two others possibly very disparate schedules. you can still have an intelligent conversation and relatable experience to someone else later.
EDIT 2: (sometimes) to me, people use movies as a way to avoid meaningful interactions with whomever it is they view them with. and possibly give them something to actually talk about, I feel that you should be able to interact with a friend or family member without that crutch.

So your answer is "it's kind of pathetic"?
Because there are posters on here that would say no one exists that thinks that way (ie. it was a personal conscious decision of mine to invent that negative stigma from nothing). I'd be curious to hear a discussion between you and them.

When I go to the theater it's usually because I want to see a movie. I can do that just as well without other people.
Then again, I'm not one of the people who'll go to a theater and then decide what to watch either. I'm there because I want to see a specific movie and I'm too impatient to wait for the DVD.

Going alone is actually pretty good, no one talking on the phone constantly, no one laughing uneccessarily, although some movies I watch with friends so we have shit to talk about the day later.

Nope. Why? It's a movie, you can't talk or interact with your party/friend/etc or at least you are NOT supposed to. Stop letting others judge you.

Keep in mind, I only asked a question (albeit displaying the negative connotations more than some are comfortable with it seems). I've never indicated that this is how I personally feel, and I'm a bit disappointed that some of you jump to conclusions so quickly.

I prefer to watch movies alone, it's easier to lose myself in the story without being distracted. Going alone has its perks too, often the ticket staff would "upgrade" my seating in a crowded cinema because there's a single vacant seat in the back rows :D

Not pathetic at all! Infact I think that some movies are way better alone than in company.
I usually go alone and some time after the premiere, since there's usually very few people (Infact sometimes I got the whole place for myself). That being said, I didn't know that people had an social stigma with this, how is going to the cinema alone different than watching the TV alone?

Absolutely nothing wrong with it and anyone that thinks there is something wrong with it probably have severe insecurities of their own to address. Who the fuck cares what someone else does with their free time? How is going to the movies alone different from sitting on your couch watching a movie alone? If you care what strangers think that fucking much, you need some help.
I used to go to the movies alone often as there were always films I wanted to see that no one else wanted to see. Usually a lot of Oscar winners as I was a really extreme film buff (I had to see EVERYTHING) for a long time and it was hard to find people interested in going to see some of them. Foreign films too, so I'd go by myself. I'm married now, so its different but Id have no problem going to see something alone if my wife was not interested in seeing something, but we've never had that issue. We take turns picking and 99% of the time we both want to see the same thing anyway.

I think you should stop caring about what others might think that much.
If it's a movie you want to see and you don't have anyone to go with you, then go alone and enjoy the movie. Why not?

A film is not worth watching if it doesn't give you something to think about after viewing it. I prefer watching films by myself because you can't do that with friends around.

I've been thinking the same for a while since my gf left me. All of my friends have gfs and they act as if they were already married. I loved going to the cinema with my gf, and I can't bring myself to going alone (even popcorns seem like a problem now...)

Not really. Since you aren't supposed to talk during a movie it really makes no difference whether you go with a group or not as far as the actual experience goes.
