Yep, having empathy for civilians is a bad quality these days. /s
Comment has been collapsed.
By announcing they're doing it, more people will buy the games, and more money will go to charity. Is this really that complicated?
And yes, that might also result in some people learning about, or playing Amanita's games, and raising some goodwill for the company for the future. How horrible.
Comment has been collapsed.
They would lose some money, devoting labour to organizing the campaign. And potentially some lost revenue from people buying their games now, rather than later. I don't know what Czech tax laws are like, but I doubt deductions like these are being used as a major financial incentive. And I really don't care if they are.
It's both: Charity and advertising. You can't say it's not charity, when they're literally giving funds to a charity--$30,000+, from the link below. Are you OK?
https://bsky.app/profile/amanita-design.net/post/3llh6hfpmi223
Comment has been collapsed.
They are, fundamentally, losing money due to unexisting sales (from Amanita's perspective people may as well get the games for free). The tax writeoff aspect means only that they do not additionally lose money to pay taxes from the charity they are doing
Comment has been collapsed.
Is that why you blacklisted me for making this thread then? People like you are pretty gross. And I know it's because you've made this political. No other reason. You just hate Ukrainians, including civilians, because of whatever nonsense is being fed down through the propaganda machine.
Of course they are going to announce it. It's not like their games are new. Every time "This Child of Mine" by Polish devs is being sold to help children who are victims of war or disaster, they announce it. How the feck else are we going to hear about it.
Comment has been collapsed.
No. That's not the reason, and you know it. Well, I've returned the favour, so you can stay on my shitlist forever. My blacklist is REALLY small.
Have a nice day!
Comment has been collapsed.
LOL! The arrogance on yourself. The only one I see attempting to cause drama is you!
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah that’s what they meant, last time something like this came up, they were there causing lots of drama.

You've managed to go from my whitelist to blacklist in one go - well done
Comment has been collapsed.
Wow I pleased I am you never make giveaways anymore and I never enter them perfect dis-match
Comment has been collapsed.
Well to say that your not the first person I heard that sort of comment from would be c correct it can be a bit horrid I to have had problems deciding which games to keep and which to giveaway
(decided against keeping you on my blacklist just removed from whitelist for now)
Comment has been collapsed.
wait did you just announce you were giving stuff away?
i'm sure it is different when you do it vs. Amanita.
Comment has been collapsed.
Your suggestion that Amanita is betting on substantially increased sales for their 5-20 years old games later on, because of them doing a charity event now, is about as realistic.
Just imagine, you suggested that you could drop 1500+ giveaways at any moment!11!
You obviously only did that to get whitelisted by people, so that you benefit from access to more giveaways!
What other explanation could there be? Expressing your potential of being generous for naught? Oh please, unimaginable.
Yeah, it's bs. But so was your tale about Amanita.
Comment has been collapsed.
Not to mention, this is not the first time Amanita did this. They are listed on People in Need's website as a donor. They did exactly the same thing for a week in October 24, they donated all sales to the charity. They certainly have my respect.
Comment has been collapsed.
lol this exactly, someone mentioned putting them on their blacklist. “Well I have 1500+ keys to give away, so if I ever start giving those out, you’ll be missing them! Until then, I just want access to yours.”
Comment has been collapsed.
So that they wouldn’t block you from entering their giveaways, since there is a chance you’ll make some again at some point. Which is still a jerk move, far worse than anything the people whose charity you claim isn’t even charity because they brought it up have done, lol. And then you blacklist everyone who doesn’t share in your hate for the cause or the fact that it’s charitable or whatever your reason is, because apparently donating to charity is a cause of drama, when you are actually the cause of 100% of the drama here, lol. But yeah, no, I totally see where you’re coming from, you hate that companies are willing to donate their money to people that need it, and you can’t even be bothered to make any giveaways anymore because you have so much to give that must have just suddenly happened, otherwise you probably would have been giving away keys as you got extras since you’ve been nothing but kind, generous, and altruistic here so far…
I really don’t understand what you’re trying to prove here, but it did sound like at least wigglenose believes whatever it is.
Comment has been collapsed.
but to announce that they are going to do it.
Game theory it can be beneficial to announce your donation to a cause because
Comment has been collapsed.
He actually saved me a blacklist spot by blacklisting me first.
Probably the most altruistic thing he's ever done.
Don't you love it when people who have made less than 10 giveaways in over a year think they are punishing you by not being to enter your giveaways?
Comment has been collapsed.
It's actually amazing. I have received a fair few blacklists for making this thread. I'm actually happy about that. I don't really want evil people entering my GAs. lol.
Comment has been collapsed.
lol right? I'm heartbroken that my participation in your thread is going to save me a more BL spots for propaganda farm bots.
And he's been "meaning to make giveaways" because he has beaucoup beaucoup keys he's going to make lots of giveaways one day and we'll all be missing out. So sad.
Comment has been collapsed.
Hilariously, he goes on about Amanita doing this charity event for publicity. They did the same thing back in October. They are listed on People in Need's website as a donor.
Meanwhile, he's publicly announcing that he has 1500+ keys to giveaway thinking that will get him some positive publicity, or to try to make us not laugh at him blacklisting us. "Oh nooes, I'm going to miss out on all them bundle keys I probably already own or gave away. cries"
Comment has been collapsed.
I mean, not lol. I find it extremely sad. Imagine getting blacklisted for just mentioning a charity.
You and I will probably earn a few blacklists, just for mentioning we are participating in the charity that is going on. And that is sad.
Comment has been collapsed.
I know what you mean ofc. It's sad people are so hateful and brain-washed.
I just meant the reality of blacklists. I mean really... that being banned from entering (even actual) giveaways could be seen as an ultimate form of punishment for... participating in a charity (or just disagreeing with someone on an online forum about any topic) it's kinda laughable.
Nobody is getting hurt by a blacklist, it's a typical case of terminal online behavior.
... and all the while there are real people losing their lives on both side of a conflict that's all about ego. That's the really sad part.
Comment has been collapsed.
I love it how many of my WL people have just blacklisted this asshole, there's something incredibly natural in this process.

This is a good cause, so hopefully a lot of people participate.
That said; I have mostly negative feelings towards Amanita due to the Chuchel rasism incident (they changed the main character, from a black character to a ginger long after the game was released, while giving existing customers no way to swap back to the character as they knew him, because some idiots associated the existing character with blackface). In my view, it was the equivalent to if Squaresoft had swapping Barrett from FF7 with a white man a year after release. While it probably wasn't the intent, it made them look like Racists themselves. Either way, felt like they were spitting in the face of their existing customers.
Comment has been collapsed.
I had to look into this, but why call the company racist, rather than call the people stupidly ignorant for pushing for this change?
link to their announcement: https://steamcommunity.com/games/711660/announcements/detail/1706200370164824021

I wouldn't say they are racist at all. They made this little dust character that I associated with the dust sprites in some of the Ghibli films. I never even thought of blackface, not once. I suppose though, if you wanted to, you could start comparing the character to a gollywog, and that's what likely happened due to the large exaggerated mouth. People see what they want to see, and when that happens, you can be accused of something you never intended. They changed the colour to calm the outrage, then faced more outrage for changing it. You can't please everyone all at the same time.
It's like companies coming up with a logo, and then having it compared to a nazi symbol, or something else offensive. As a designer, when making something, especially based on a geometric shape, you have to make sure that even the white space between the lines can't be misinterpreted. There are people who actively look for that stuff. There's a whole reddit group dedicated to it. lol.
Comment has been collapsed.
"it was the equivalent to if Squaresoft had swapping Barrett"
Comment has been collapsed.
It was a non-incident., really.
People accused them of having a character with blackface.
They weighed the situation, decided to change the colour given the association that was being drawn, and that was the end of it.
It 'affected all existing owners' only in that the characters colour was shifted, but the colour shift didn't cause any harm and was not central to any of the gameplay, story or lore, was it?
The fact they were willing to do so to avoid any racial connotations actually suggests the opposite of racism.
If anything, your take on this situation kind of puts you in the same situation as those who accused them of using blackface on a character. You are mirroring their 'karenism'.
Comment has been collapsed.
Updated the end of my post to make my stance a bit more clear. While me saying they were racists was probably taking it too far, I do think at the very least it was unfair to their original customers to make such a change.
Comment has been collapsed.
It still doesn't explain why you feel it is in any way unfair or "spitting in the face of their existing customers" to change the palette of the main character? I highly doubt the deciding factor in whether someone purchased or enjoyed the game was the colour choice on their character.
Comment has been collapsed.
People don't generally choose a game based on something like characters skin color, but changing a characters race after people already bought the game is just fucked up. period.
Lets take an extreme example: If tomorrow you woke up and every white character in every game you own on Steam became a black man/woman, and/or vise versa, would you be ok with that? Most people would say no, so why should it be considered OK in this case?
Comment has been collapsed.
Black -> Ginger.
But if you want to treat it like they had no race to begin with, then I guess there's no use discussing it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Jigga, the character didn't have a race, it was just a black fuzzy dust thing, or whatever it was. It wasn't a person.
Now, IF it was meant to be human and had a race, then the people protesting it would have been absolutely right due to the resemblance to this: Gollywog. I really don't think it was intentional at all, just an oversight, and some people took offense. I saw posts about it at the time, and most people back then didn't think it was intentional either. That's why designers generally have people proof check our designs. And even then, some things can slip through.
They just reversed the colours on the character. They kept the same colour palette. They did not change any "race."
Comment has been collapsed.
"Ginger" isn't a race, and it was only "black" as a body colour, not a race.
Note 'body colour' and not 'skin colour'.
Unless of course you're seriously trying to say that the original Chuchel was supposed to represent the human equivalent of a black ethnicity, in which case I STRONGLY suggest you google Chuchel to remind yourself what it looks like, because that would put you into some pretty spicy water, my friend.
But yes, I do want to treat it like they had no race to begin with.
Because they didn't.
Comment has been collapsed.
All I'm saying is it's not cool for developers to change a characters body/skin color long after people have bought the product. But you're not trying to have a real conversation anymore, and are too caught up in trying to defend them, so think whatever you want.
Comment has been collapsed.
Maybe if they were humans and it were changing a race, then you might have had a point.
But they didn't do that.
It doesn't seem like you were ever trying to have a real conversation because when I try to address this you keep sidestepping and being dishonest in continuing in trying to portray it as such, and not engaging with the counterpoint. And you are doing just as you accuse me of, being 'too caught up in trying to attack them' to really reconcile with the fatal flaw in what you're asserting.
So you're either going to need to reconcile with the fact that no race was altered, or there really is nothing to discuss.
I mean, it's perfectly okay to just say "I preferred the character when they had the previous palette" or "I don't like the new palette", right? The fact you're digging in your heels and not qualifying why you feel this is a race issue or 'spitting in the face of customers' as you put it, really makes me just think this is a troll and I'm gnawing on a piece of weird bait, tbh.
Comment has been collapsed.
Just fyi, I saw you blacklisted me in the middle of our conversation. I was already starting to respond to your previous post when I decided to check since you were being so stand-off'ish, and that told me all I needed to know. You don't want a real conversation, you already made up your mind and just want to be a snarky asshole. So yea...
Like I said, think whatever you want.
Comment has been collapsed.
I agree with the others that this is an abstract non-human cartoon character and changing its color has nothing to do with changing the skin color of a human character. It's just not the same whatsoever. Think about this: would you have reacted the same way if they changed that green robot guy to pink or blue? Probably not, right? You're making associations that are just not there.
Comment has been collapsed.
I still don’t see how his race changed by them swapping the colors, but I guess some people see that? Honestly it’d be more like changing Barret to having silver skin and maybe a rusted metal arm cannon, or brown pants and green skin?
But yeah, I also don’t understand how they figured the black of the dust sprite was supposed to signify any race to begin with. And I wonder if any of the requests for them to change it came from actual players.
Comment has been collapsed.
Does it also affect the sales from other platforms? Steam takes a cut so ill probably get one game from their website instead
Edit: judging from their post on twitter, it seems so
Edit2: they use humble widget on their store page, but 95% of the proceeds go to the developer based on this info.

Sounds like he's fallen for the Russian propaganda that Ukraine was/is full of Nazis. I vaguely remember hearing that was one of the ways Russia had convinced people to join the invasion.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yep, the main official goal of the war is "denazification" of Ukraine (they've even coined a new word for that).
Comment has been collapsed.
yeah, Russia is invading other countries, bombing houses, schools, malls and other civilian infrastructure, kidnapping and "re-educating" children, threatening other countries with nuclear warheads, performing sabotages and swaying elections in Europe, oppressing domestic political opponents, throwing them into prisons or out of windows, rewriting and falsing history, brainwashing its own people, enforcing that only pure-blood Slavs can be employed in Russian companies....but BZZZZZZ here is "against the Nazis in UA".
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah? It's interesting that many of this "Ukrainian propaganda" is being spread by Russian media themselves.
Tell me, how would you describe freedom of speech in Russia? Can you freely criticize Putin and government without fear of repercussion? Can you organize demonstrations or run a political opposition? Are you happy with your alliance with North Korea?
And if Russia is so great, why no Western people want to live, work, study in there? It's the other way around.
Comment has been collapsed.
That page is probably censored in Russia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship_of_Wikipedia
But that fact speaks for itself and proves the point.
Comment has been collapsed.
Unfortunately, people who are caught up in the propaganda machine usually don't want to listen to the view that comes from outside. They're conditioned to think everyone else is lying.
Do you remember that Russian man living in Ukraine with his wife and kids, right at the start of the invasion, who called home to tell his parents that they had to flee their home due to the attack on their village/town? He said they had passed dead bodies in the street and were trying to shield their children's eyes. The mother mostly believed him, but the father called him a liar and said "you are bombing yourselves over there to make it look like Russia is doing it." Like, the level of brainwashing is insane. That man didn't believe that his own child and grandchildren were in danger because of the shit he was fed on TV. The son was safe in Poland when he was telling his story. Absolutely crazy stuff.

I actually have a couple on my backlog that I've already played outside of Steam. They're nice games. I was introduced to Machinarium by a college professor back in 2017 who was trying to prove to us that Flash wasn't dead. It was a Flash game then. lol. I was studying software development and that class in "Media" was all Flash lol. BUT my hons BA a few years before that was in Multimedia Design. I had to learn Flash AS as part of that, and flash was already on the way out. This woman refused to believe it. Needless to say, Machinarium has since moved away from Flash AS lol. It's my favourite of their games that I've played. I bought Creaks yesterday, it looks interesting too.

I really disliked how they handled the Chuchel situation. It could easily be fixed with a simple color scheme select option. But apparently the opinion of some blogger (probaly, I dunno who was offended by th black Chuchel) matters more than their paying customers. Now I have to use third-party solutions to get the version I actually paid for. All because they're willing to bend their art at a whim of some random person form the internet and not willing to do even a little extra work for the people who actually supported them with their purchases.

you installed a third party program just so you could have your shoop da woop chuchel? thats insane behavior.

Tell me it didn't unintentionally resemble this: Gollywog. Like, I didn't even make that connection when playing the game years ago. But I was like... yeah, I see it, when it was brought up. Changing it was the right thing to do in this case.
People made "big orange baby" blimps of that orange dude. HAHA! I think Chuchel will be okay. Well... I THINK. lol.

That's exactly what I associated him with, the Ghibli sprites. But when people started saying it looked like blackface, I was like "okay, yes, I see where they could make that connection." It could happen to any one of us, to be honest. You know, you come up with some design, and someone says "that looks like..." then you are like "Ooops, okay, didn't know" and change it. :)

Amanita Design, the studio behind Machinarium, Chuchel, Samorost, etc,(all point and click games) is donating 100% of all sales from their games and DLC to People in Need to provide humanitarian aid for those affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine, until April 2.
While not at historical low, if you’ve ever wanted to pick up any of their games, it'd be supporting a good cause. Machinarium is awesome btw.
Just saw the announcement now on my Steam since I own some of their games.
