I'm always torn about roguelikes. In theory they have multiple elements I dislike but in practice a lot of them are fun non the less ;)

Thanks for the awesome train! Rogueli(tk)es is one of my favorite genres.

Can't say roguelikes are my favourite, but they are easy to get in and fun to play. Like, I know I'm going to die in 10 minutes, but then the 2nd run is usually easier and I get more familiar withstuff.

I like some and dislike some, and my preferences lean more towards roguelite. When permadeath is a thing, I prefer to fail because my strategy failed. This means I'll have to tweak my strategy as I gain knowledge, experience, and tools. RNG fails are fine, they feel like "oh well, I'm looking forward to a more lucky run", and when that lucky run comes along, it gives me a rush like winning a lottery!

Now if a run fails because I wasn't quick enough or my focus slipped, I feel cheated because it's not something I can build upon. It feels like a wasted run. Muscle memory training is not my idea of a fun game. Games that give me some time to think about my next move or have a robust enough progression system to make up for my subpar skills are perfect for me in those genres, games that have twitch based combat that relies on fast reactions are not.

I personally prefer designed games than one's that have randomness, especially when it comes to level design. I'm also a kind of person who prefers playing a game pretty much once and moving on so replayability isn't necessarily the most important factor to me.

But when a rouge like is done well and the repetition isn't distracting or obvious, they can be really awesome and are great at keeping a game forever challenging as you can't just memorize your way through the game. I feel it works best when a game is less level or world focused and more combat focused.
