The first time I've learned of this was when I logged with my Path of Exile account first time launching through Steam and all my previously unlocked achievements popped up on Steam client

Today I was surprised when I found a blog post about World of Tanks merging their standalone accounts with Steam-linked accounts. That means you can have all your things under one roof(including those seasonal free DLCs on Steam), and sure enough, unlocked all my previously earned achievements on Steam

Do you know of other games that work like this?

Pretty much any games available through the Ubisoft launcher.
When some Ubisoft games started getting achievements in steam, people would log in the steam version and they'd obtain it all immediately.
So, Far Cry 3/4/5/6 and others.

But you need to own it on Steam, right?
Actually purchase in both platforms

Yes once you start them the 1st time on Steam, Ubisoft games unlock all the achievements you already unlocked if you had already the game on Uplay/Uconnect. Same when you buy and start on Steam a game you already played on Origin/EA app.

"Actually purchase in both platforms"
Negative, a Steam purchase always activates the game on Ubisoft. A Ubisoft purchase doesn't, however, activate a game on Steam. I can also confirm that saves sync between game versions, so if you played a Ubisoft-only game, then bought the Steam version, the saves are compatible and progress will sync.

The achievements have worked this way for:

  • Assassin's Creed Revelations;
  • Assassin's Creed Black Flag;
  • Assassin's Creed Unity;
  • Assassin's Creed Liberation HD;
  • Assassin's Creed Rogue;
  • Assassin's Creed Syndicate;
  • Assassin's Creed Valhalla;
  • Far Cry 3;
  • Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon;
  • Far Cry 4;
  • Far Cry Primal;
  • Far Cry 5;
  • Far Cry New Dawn;
  • Far Cry 6;
  • Immortals Fenyx Rising;
  • Tom Clancy's The Division;
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands;
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint;
  • Watch Dogs;
  • Watch Dogs 2;
  • Watch Dogs: Legion.

I heard EA games do it just like Ubisoft from the above message.

Warframe unfortunately does not do it, if you got an achievement while using their own launcher or Epic, it'll remain locked forever on Steam. Unless you unlock it with a different Warframe account while using the same Steam account, which can be absolute pain if it was an achievement that required dozens, hundreds of hours of gameplay.

I think they changed this some months ago for Warframe. I had a bunch of achievements lost to the void like that, but they simply all popped up as I logged in the game after some update. Not sure how it works exactly tho.

For EA it depends on the game.
For example, in Jedi Fallen Order I had the story finished, there were a few achievements left to explore. I installed the game in Steam, loaded last save, got all the previous achievements and just continued where I left off in EA.

In Mass Effect Andromeda I didn't get any (actually I got 2 or 3, I can't even remember which ones), the game was 99% completed. But the result is very bad, because all the achievements that are tied to the count and are taken into account in the game statistics, did not continue from the last save. That is, for example, I had 1999 kills, and for the achievement I need 2000, and even after loading the save I need to get 3999 now.

As for other publishers, I also had problems with saves for Doom Eternal, there was even an application, as far as I remember, that converted saves for different platforms, but it only transferred part of the data tied to statistics, and did not unlock the story ones, and moreover, Steam did not unlock them when I replayed the game on the same save, because these achievements were already obtained in the in-game profile statistics.

i would imagine it's a common feature of any cross platform games, specifically multiplayer games that have a general "master" account linked to all instances of the game. games i've personally come across with such 'feature', i believe, are Brawlhalla, Dead By Daylight, Rocket League and Fall Guys

though it should alse be a thing with singleplayer games, particularly those that track achievement completion and stats through savefiles. one example i remember was when i installed Deus Ex The Fall through steam for the first time and several achievements popped up when i opened it because i still had a savefile from a previous time when i had pirated the game xD

The Ubisoft games do this. Also, the new Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced automatically syncs achievements with the original Grand Theft Auto V (now known as 'Legacy').

Back when Desura still existed I remember once I started playing One Finger Death Punch on Steam after having played it for a couple of hours on Desura and suddenly getting a lot of achievements, but that info is basically useless now.
I think many games that keep one general save for any installation tend to behave like that.

Not sure does it still work but if you played Overwatch 1 back in the day and now play OW2 via steam, your achievements got "carried over" from OW1 and that way to steam. I suppose its bit of hassle to download the game first just for that tho.

For some games you could launch via GeForce Now and avoid the download
Not sure about OW2
