I don't have anything particularly helpful, but I will second the idea of waiting until after early access for RPGs. Since the genre is so heavily story driven, jumping in part way and then having to grind through over and over when updates land is jarring.
For suggestions, I would go with http://store.steampowered.com/sub/30440/ and Underrail, with the caveat being that Underrail is EARLY ACCESS (hypocritical) and Agarest is nickel and dime DLC the game, and I don't know if character appearance adapts to armor equip because I haven't played in a while.

Agarest was brought up at the beginning of the thread, and I asked about the DLC. It's all "bonus" stuff that makes the game easier, not stuff that's required to play/needed for any additionally content. Armor is tied to characters/classes, though weapons do change based on what you equip.
Underrail doesn't look super appealing, especially in early access state. What would you recommend about it, and what do you think?

I'm looking for a grid/hex based fantasy/medieval RPG game to play. Something similar to Final Fantasy Tactics (and Advanced, Advanced 2) and X-Com: EU/EW. However, I want character models to develop with their armor/weapons. What I mean by that is I want armor to be more than stats. Squad/team of 3 to 8 controllable and customizable characters is a HUGE plus.
I've been looking at Blackguards, but it seems that game drops all things good about it about 5 hours in. Divinity: Original Sin looks really interesting, but only the first ~20 hours (generous) of gameplay are currently in-game. Other than that it's wait-until-we-feel-like-it because "early access."
So these two games are out because I don't feel like paying $40 for 5 hours, and I don't enjoy the idea of early access-ing an RPG.
ANYWAYS I was hoping the community here would be able to help me find a game to fill my wants. What have you played? And how would you rate it?
