Quick story short: I wrote "thanks!" on a giveaway I entered, the creator replied saying that "a guy with level 10 saying thanks is weird". I asked "why"? He responded "AutoJoiner". I said: "What's that?" - legit question, I have no idea what it is, from the name I could derive it automatically joins giveaways? Anyways, he responded "Whatever, bye!" and blacklisted me.

So yeah I think I'm gonna stop saying thanks before winning a game because apparently people hate and blacklist you for it.

Big FU to the person in question, you know who you are, and for the rest of you guys here's an obligatory giveaway!

"People are strange" is generally a good way of thinking when going through life. Especially people on the internet do things that would make them seem like a total freak in real life.

if you want to say thanks for something make sure its customized for that giveaway otherwise people will automatically go straight to thinking its an autojoiner comment if its generic.

think of it this way though... they can't join your stuff either.

I have a level 10 who blacklisted me for putting please allow to delete if it doesn't work on a half dozen giveaways(they also have something against people being in the delete if not working group in particular). I am sure some know who I am talking about... Whats funny is I have had 0 giveaways deleted when I made GA's for those groups.

I wouldn't let it bother you tbh.

That makes sense but it doesn't bother me, trust me - I'm an honest person and when someone falsely claims that I did something wrong when I didn't - that bothers me. I don't stand for it in real life.

It gets complicated.

I had the pleasure of watching someone, I won't say who, state near the end of the March Madness Megaevent how they couldn't remember why they'd put one of the gifters onto their blacklist. But took them off as they clearly weren't that bothered as to why they were on it and wanted to take part in the community event.

It's a nice enough story and that person has deleted their comments since and so no harm done and everyone's happy.

But it got me to thinking. I used to reciprocate being blacklisted by blacklisting those in response by way of mutual respect for their decision.

I got told by chance by someone here that anyone who blacklists you can't enter any GAs you do and so it was a pointless effort. I then cleared my blacklist because it felt like a needless pursuit.

Having witnessed someone in realtime remove someone from their blacklist to then participate in an event they couldn't have otherwise got me to thinking further. Why isn't there a reasonably long cooldown time for removing someone from a blacklist? Say the full 28 days that a GA can run.

If people wish to brag about their blacklist (Some do) and negate the responsibilities which come with having one when it suits them, there should be factors at play to stop a system like that from being gamed.

I don't mind being blacklisted. But I would rather know that those who feel the need to cannot then quickly change their mind when it suits them to then reapply their conditions when it is inopportune for them.

Just my two thoughts on the matter, semi-complicated at best I suppose.

There is a cooldown. If you blacklist someone for a long time and then unblacklist them, you can't enter their GAs for a while.

That's good to know!

I suppose making sure multiple additions and removals of the same person on a blacklist would be the next area a ganker would exploit.

All I know is that I'll stick to my reciprocation methods which I'd done from respect previously. I've no problem with being blacklisted, I just think it should be for life, if at all.

If you’ve blacklisted someone for more than a week, you have the maximum cooldown of about a week before you can enter any of their giveaways again.
If you blacklist someone 12 secs ago, you have to wait 12 secs.

Good to know Mayanaise!

So a week cooldown for a week or longer, and an equal amount of time up until that point for taking someone off your blacklist.

That makes me think that the reciprocation method + no publicly announced GAs lasting longer than 7 days should work as standard for me to irk those just messing with their egos for kicks.

I really don't mind blacklists, but they should certainly not be used willy-nilly and gloated about.

This thread's been an education, thanks HustlaOG, Lext and Mayanaise :)

It would be nice to give an option to remove someone from blacklist, but keep their giveaways restricted to you.
In past I removed few people from my blacklist, cause we kept talking on discord and they were decent people, who made some weird decision in my eyes in past. But after I remove them, I don't enter their giveaways anyway anmore, cause that is fair ro me.

If they have the link (and it's not a group/whitelist giveaway) they can just either log out (or use another browser/Incognito mode) and go trough the train that way, so being blacklisted just makes you not be able to enter that giveaway but you can see it still and participate in the event with some extra steps...

For me that's the biggest problem with whitelist/blacklist system. I really wish you could write down a reason when adding someone on SG, not for the person to see, but for yourself to remember.

I've been in situations where group Admins reached out to me saying someone in same group is blacklisted by me and could I please remove them from the list.
I've also been looking through my WL and thinking what was exact reasons I added people to it, was it them good community member, saying something nice to me, some cool puzzle they created? I want to remember those things.

Now, could I write it down somewhere else? Ofcourse, but it's much more inconvenient.

You can use ESGST to add tags to people. That's what i do to remember why I blacklisted someone (and you can do that for people you whitelist, or even on those outside any list)

Since no one has explained yet, an autojoiner is a script that auto joins you to various giveaways, as you guessed. Many people set things to also automatically say thanks to every giveaway. This is more obvious on level 0 giveaways, where you can see several people say precisely the same thing on every giveaway. Some people hate it, if they do lots of giveaways, because they get lots of notifications from these scripted thanks. It can make it hard to see more specific questions or comments that need responses, is usually the explanation.

I try to say thanks even in community giveaways, by saying why I might be excited for a game in particular. But yeah, I'm also cautious about doing so.

(Also, thanks! My kid and I like doing co-op games together.)

It's a form of SG initiation.

Some BL you for just saying thanks, some BL you for not saying anything.

Some seem to BL you just for discussing BL's, which is why i refer to it as such.

People are always gonna be people. We got a bunch of cool ones, and at least just as many young idiots who dont know any better, or just enjoy the small thrill BL'ing someone gives them.

People truly revel in cancel culture...

Sorry your positive vibes got stomped on. Yet to be fair to the guy who DL'd you, he's probably fed up with the string of autojoiner "Thank You's" and thus you get large swaths of people going straight to BL in order to reduce the annoyance.

Kinda weird that you responded in good faith, and so are obviously not a bot, or troll, and yet still got BL'd.

Only thing i can offer is maybe next time leave a slightly more personal comment, or like me, generally avoid commenting unless you win.
Sometimes i'll comment more, but only if i'm truly inspired to say something more than, "thanks."

I agree and I try to do the same, I avoid commenting when joining but I am always adding a thank you to the giveaways I won. Also I like to get back with an update after I played the game (I only join games I know I will play at some point). But the strangest thing was to be blacklisted just after I won, because I didn't get the chance to thanks that person for the gift. I really appreciate all the effort done by every giveaway creator and I only assume that some users have a rule that allows a user to win only once, only one of their giveaways. In this way they are increasing the chances for everyone to win something at least once. Which is fair and sounds generous but they don't notify you about this.

Some people can definitely contribute a fair bit of ugliness to this site with the whole wanton blacklisting and bot/leech paranoia. People come here to win games. I try not to hold just wanting to win games against anyone, as long as they show some form of appreciation for their wins and at least seem like pleasant individuals (/don't act contrary to that).

I'm sorry for that. I'll tell something that happened to me.

I have low vision without corrective lenses.

For a while, I participated in a group for beginners with a limit on the number of games won. I was travelling and often used my mobile, since the site does not have a mobile mode and accessibility is complicated.

That time I had broken my glasses. Got a warning from the creator of this group because I had won a prize, but I had not redeemed it or marked it as 'received', and it was not even close to the 7 days agreed by the SG team in the terms. He found out that I was entering other giveaways, even though he had not even seen the notification on the site.

I redeemed it and marked it as received. I spent a few more days travelling in a place without a mobile signal, let alone internet via radio, broadband or similar. I still didn't have glasses, accessing the site only from mobile.

I ended up winning a few more giveaways in this group, while I was still travelling and at that time, I received another warning from this user. As soon as I accessed the site, quickly while I was in a place with signal, I redeemed the prizes that were sent to me. But unfortunately I exceeded the number of wins allowed for that group and was summarily blocked, without appeal.

I explained the situation and even offered to give back to the group an additional number of games that were exceeded. I was treated in a ridiculously rude manner. I already realised that the person had serious traumas in life, on the internet and also in SG.

He is well known. No, I'm not afraid of him. I will still give back to the community in a more consistent way, since, at the moment, I have no way of giving back in a better way.

I like to send and receive good words and good wishes from people behind these 'cold' screens, so that the warmth of intentions can somehow overcome the apathy of the machine and show that, deep down, we are human.

You are in my WL, OP. I appreciate the words and the kindness.

Cheers!

It's a tough call.

However, understand that seeing someone enter other giveaways when you have warned him once is a very bad sign in most people books.

Being in the U7 group (and I assume this is the one you are referring to), if I see someone not redeeming gifts but still entering giveaways, I will clearly not suppose this is in all goodwill.

I'd add we had some users totally abusing the system in all sorts of way, so some people's patience may grow thin on dubious situations.

Not saying you're wrong here, but there are always two sides of the same coin.

I see that a lot of people hate it so I've had to break the habit. I feel so rude and entitled when I enter without showing gratitude for the chance 😖😂 sometimes I can't help myself and often get told to stop spamming or cop a blacklist for it.

Personally it makes me smile when I see people excited about the giveaways I'm hosting. I may not always have time to reply to everyone but it only takes a second to clear the notifications.

Look, if every SG user was sitting in the same room irl, there'd be some of us that just don't click with each other. That's okay! We just wouldn't interact with that person. A black list is the same thing, although a bit more abrupt at times 😂 I want to get rid of some keys while I chat and make friends, they want to get rid of their keys and keep it moving. The black list feature gives everyone what they want. 🥰

And because of these rabid blacklisters that apparently hate to see the red number by the message icon most users are so afraid to say "Thanks" without having won these days that you can make a public giveaway with hundreds of entries and it finishes with zero comments, complete and utter silence, all we see are entries from users that clicked on the green button and then quickly scurried away in fear.
Thanks guys, your hostility scares everyone from talking, what a great job you did.

Nobody will blacklist a person when they write something non-generic e.g. why they want this game. Thousands of members use autojoin scripts and you'll see "thanks, thanks for the chance, etc." spammed in most giveaways. In most cases no showing of gratitude but negligence to turn off comment functionality in the script they use because they don't care or are too stupid to figure it out.

You bark at the wrong tree.

Say thanks to the autojoiners (and cg because he absolute don't care), that use in a tiny minority the thanks script function on top, because they don't interact with the community in the GAs.
The auto thanks comments are then on top annoying because of the existing message system.
And the only way to stop this spam bombardement is to blacklist the autojoiners with auto thanks script activated or do GAs with higher level req. that at least the autojoiners with activated thanks script are blocked and only the masses that silent/quiet cheat are able to enter.

In each case THIS is the reason why GA comments look so "empty" nowadays.

Ps.: I don't know someone that have something against honest, manual written, not generic, thanks comments and i never had problems when i wrote such a thanks in a comment of a GA.

In all fairness, this post only exists because someone had a problem with a genuine comment & Axleflox's comment says people are too scared to simply say "thanks". Everything you've said is valid but we can simply blacklist these bot users without engaging. That eliminates the risk of being nasty when real people reply to us. 🥰

I don't think anyone has any issue with genuine comments. It's the people that use a bot to spam the same thanks message on every single GA they join. Those warnings seem like more of a way to weed out the bots. I also imagine people would read the GA description if they're going to leave a comment, so if you aren't a bot, I imagine it's hard to miss. Though I am afraid to comment sometimes, but that's more because of the website's general "do anything at all, get blacklisted," rather than those specific warnings lmao

I don't like much autojoiners because i don't like chasing winners for 1 week while they look present connecting every x hours here, but connect just once every 1-2-3 weeks in reality to check if the fishing was good. But wouldn't blacklist for that, and certainly not for a polite comment or lack of any comment, so sorry for what happened to you. Just don't forget to check if the gifter asked something else than a thanks or specifically asked not to thanks because otherwise you would be in trouble with a generic message.

At least this time you know the reason.
I don't know the reason of most of my blacklists even if I sometimes find a user that blacklisted me. But that's OK (even if I would like to know the reason, at least to try to correct what I did wrong). I know I can be blacklisted because of these reasons:
My ratio is low, but not terrible.
I have Gifted some games that were free on other sites (Fanatical).
I almost only make Group Giveaways nowadays.

But other than these I don't know more reasons (I try to be amicable on comments, and not argue with anyone)

I tend to avoid leaving comments on GAs I enter unless the gifter asked a question or we have had convos before on SG or Steam, mostly because I don't want to clog inboxes and also some people are taking comments the wrong way but I always leave a note when I win a GA and I try to make it more than "thanks" because auto-joiners seem to be using that kind of things and I'd rather leave something more personal about the game I won.

It's a matter of personal preference but I'm sure things would be different without bots driving people crazy

I once knew somebody who had a policy of blacklisting everybody who ever won a game from him. His reasoning was this: "You just got a free game. Let somebody else win the next few." He would periodically go through his BL and anybody who had been on there over 12 months he would then remove.

And, of course, there's no way to ask somebody why you were added unless you happen to realize you suddenly can't access their GAs anymore AND you find them somewhere in the discussions to be able to comment somewhere that would get their attention.

I admit I have BL people in the past for that reason, although if I was having a conversation with them then I would explain my point instead of just going straight to the BL. There's two points here, at least for me: 1: Yes, there is an autojoin extension you can get which will automatically join giveaways based on some criteria you set, and one of the options is to add a thank you message (which can also be set to do it when you manually join a giveaway). So if somebody sees a generic thank you message, they will think the most likely reason for it is using that extension or something similar to automatically enter giveaways, commonly referred to as "bots". 2: It spams the giveaway creator. As a creator yourself I'm sure you understand this. The last time I made a (small) train, by the time it was over I had EIGHT PAGES of comments to wade through, and 98% of them were the same people saying the exact same "thank you" message on every single giveaway. Fortunately I was keeping up on it the entire time so I didn't have to do the full 8 pages at once, but that was still a lot of unnecessary messages to wade through each time I logged in.

Side note, that "AutoJoin for SteamGifts" extension is actually the way I found this place. I was looking for extensions for managing my constantly growing Steam wishlist (which I never found) but I stumbled across that extension. I was like "What's SteamGifts?" and looked it up. I've been here ever since. But that's also how I know what it can do. It can also be quite handy, if you turn off the auto-join and auto-thank options. For example, it adds a join button on the main page next to each giveaway entry (but it only adds the description to the main page AFTER you click the join button), and it has an "infinite scroll" option so when you get to the bottom of the page it automatically grabs the next page and tacks it on so you end up with a single page. I do use that feature myself, it's very handy.

edit: It looks like you were on my BL list... most likely for the same reason. I have now removed you and added a heart instead.
edit2: In fact, after thinking about this situation, and my response slightly higher about not knowing you've been BL or if you do discover it not knowing WHY ... I've decided to remove everybody (all 27 people) from my BL and start over. I will starting adding in the descriptions to my giveaways that if I see somebody post the same thank you twice, THEN I will BL them. This way people have a warning before it happens.
