I don't trust that source. Anyway for steam to come to linux, first they need to port Source or else it will be fairly empty.

Also, it was official all the way back in 2010. These guys were just WAY ahead of the curve.

It is possible they're talking about the dedicated server, though I'm pretty sure there will be a native client eventually.
Here is a page for no apparent reason

I don't want quote that email, but it's clearly for a non-server reason they are looking for a expert Linux developer.

Well i guess it would be more flexible, but they would have to rework some games

Who used linux he know that there is wine where you can play a lot of games with it (i played almost everything i wanted) you can even setup directx 10 but you need to know alot about linux and how to setup to play. Valve games are very easy to setup to play on linux i think i even played half life without wine or other emulators on linux. If Valve want to put Steam on linux they can make it, just to configure somehow to run games inside steam like emulators, but i don't think microsoft will allow them to put directx on linux.

Steam is also a set of libraries for game development (like achievements and server browser API), popular online shop and a delivery system, which Linux was lacking before Desura appeared, and Desura doesn't have any Steam features yet. Basically when Steam comes to Linux, indie developers (and then AAA) will have a tool to deploy native games. Even if Valve won't port their games on Linux, other developers and publishers will have less concerns about selling their Linux game.

Valve ported some Source games on MacOS X (Portal, TF2, HL2...). They don't use DirectX, but OpenGL.
