it looks great but why would they do something like this for free 0_o whats the catch?

It's not exactly "free", you are forced to pay for a freedompop device. Like if you picked to get "free" on-the go or home internet, you have to pick from one of their routers. If you pick phone, then you are forced to pay for one of their phones. On the bottom it says "click here if you have your own device", if you do that, you can't get "free" service, and have to pay without even having the trial. Also keep in mind that the coverage is limited for Freedompop.
