Grandia -- A tale of kid, who wants nothing more to be an adventurer and fight epic battles. Then goes on his adventure and grows up. Love, loss, wonder, duty and self sacrifice. Gets me every time.
Lunar 2 Eternal Blue -- A love story, with excellent characters each with their own backstory. Characters change over time. Still to date, my favorite game of all time. Also, the first game I ever played with an Epilogue that gave a second equally awesome and satisfying ending.
Both are old school JRPGs. Complete with beautiful music, cinematic, and voice acting.

For me, the first game that touched myself emotionally was Knights of the Old Republic by far (The first one, the second didn't touched me at all), never found a game that gave me the satisfaction and the emotions that KotOR gave to me.

Haven't finished it yet, but Spec Ops: The Line has one of the best stories around. Not too complicated plot, but the game actually shows how gruesome war can be.

Ohhh although it's a common kind of story, I liked how the story was made in the Age of Mithology, when I was young, the story really catch me and made me feel like I was in the game.
one that I hate and love so much is Dead Island, the story of the game is so catchy, but it's not well connected with the gameplay and ends like a pile of bullshit, I must admit that I thought a lot about the story of the game while I was playing, although it's just borderlands in a zombie apocalypse

According to Jorge Borges there are only four stories that are told and re-told: the siege of the city, the return home, the quest, and the (self-) sacrifice of God.
I really liked the story of Dead Island, it was really immersive and suspenseful. What makes you think it was not well connected with the gameplay?

Yes it was really immersive and made me waiting for the answers. But the gameplay itself was more or less just do a lot of random missions (really repetitives) with cutscenes. I enjoyed playing Dead Island (except the glitchy boss), but I felt sometimes like I was doing a lot of random things just to reach the end, not because it was part of the story.

True, they build the scene with so many back stories and stuff and in the end, all that matters is what color we like - Red, Green or Blue :(

Green is my favorite, so I was happy with the beam. I haven't checked it out since the extended ending was implemented though. Always meant to but Origin decided to get all weird and since it's in a sandbox I don't care to mess with it too much
Edit: also because it's Origin. But that is prejudice that I just haven't found the reason to overturn

Origin has been pretty decent for a little while now... The extended ending certainly adds some finishing touches, but nothing to ERMAHGERD D: about :|

Mass Effect was good. But I think the one (and possibly only) game that REALLY made me go "wait, what?!" is Dragon Age: Origins. When faced with a very... let's call it awkward... choice with a female character towards the end I actually had to stop to think for a second. Then the video game part of my mind kicked in and said "I totally want to see where this goes with the ridiculous option!"
And though it is a moot point now (the servers closed in November,) City of Heroes had some very solid storylines too. Rest in peace Lorne Lightningclaw.
Edit: Half-Life 2 and its episodes have great narrative too. As does Portal 1+2 to an extent - valve games definitely play the silent protagonist. But they are well worth the playthrough to anybody who hasn't done so yet

You already mentioned The Walking Dead, so I guess you're not too squeamish. I'd recommend Silent Hill 2, exactly the second one — it was and still pretty much is the Shakespeare of gaming, though you'd have to endure the voice acting which is just atrocious. Then the recent Thirty Flights of Loving is very lovingly crafted, if you like having a few sleepless nights thinking "what the hell happened". Then there is Portal, but I'm pretty sure you already played it (if not — DO IT!). Psychonauts were quite good at the time, if you're a fan of light stuff that doesn't clog up your thinking pipes. If you're more into epic world-building, then pick whichever Bioware title tickles your fancy.

What's the best games you've played thus far, in terms of the in-game story?
How the story in the game touched you emotionally, or mentally, such as games that might make you went mindf*cked like The Walking Dead? or games that have touched you emotionally, even made you cry? :p
These games focus on the stories rather than the gameplay itself. Some might even argue these games are not worthy to be called games because they're just too focused on stories, etc.
Share us your pick. It doesn't always have to be those AAA title games, there are lots of games i'm sure you can recommend, indie for example.
