Here we go, I'll start.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10

Enemy Of The State (1998)

American political action thriller film. It's about a lawyer targeted by a group of corrupt NSA agents after he comes into possession of incriminating evidence against them. Great cast (Will Smith, Gene Hackman, Jon Voight, Regina King, Lisa Bonet, Jack Black, Seth Green, Gabriel Byrne, Jason Lee, Jake Busey, Jason Robards, Philip Baker Hall and more). This is very good. Gene Hackman doesn't appear until almost an hour into this movie. I was waiting so long for him to show up I almost thought I watched the wrong movie. Overall I can definitely recommend this one.

I love this movie so much! It's one of those films that I always have the urge to watch through Just One More Time when I run across it playing on TV or in a menu somewhere. It's just perfect, and everyone is playing at the top of their game. Tony Scott really completely aced this one.

Mississippi Burning (1988)

American crime thriller film. It's about two FBI agents with wildly different styles who arrive in Mississippi to investigate the disappearance of some civil rights activists. Great cast (Gene Hackman, Frances McDormand, Willem Dafoe, Brad Dourif, Michael Rooker, Tobin Bell, R. Lee Ermey, Kevin Dunn and more) delivering great performances in a great movie. All around great. Highly recommended.

It's such a good movie. Not the best reason to finally watch it of course but still.
Another movie that didn't endear Alan Parker to American audiences...
I wish Gene Hackman had made another movie with Frances McDormand. They had amazing on-screen chemistry.

No Other Land (2024)

After winning the Oscar this year for Best Documentary Feature, No Other Land suddenly launched into the public eye with its story of the ongoing destruction by Israeli forces of the Palestinian regional community of Masafer Yatta in the occupied West Bank. As a counterpoint to the relentless cycle of building, razing, and confrontation, the film observes but (I thought) doesn't dwell too much on the working friendship between Basel and Yuval, the Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers who worked together through the violence, exhaustion, and danger. It's a tough watch, no matter what perspectives and baggage you may bring in with you. I watched the film just after the Academy Awards, but before the new round of promotion began, and my audience was absolutely silent at the end, walking quietly, as if under a weighty pall, out into the lobby before saying anything at all.

Novocaine (2025)
Action movie about a man that suffers from Congenital insensitivity to pain, or CIP, that works at bank, has his girlfriend kidnapped and goes after her.

I got into an early access showing tonight and I REFUSE to speak of it any more. NO spoilers.

Just going to say that it was a LOT of fun.

Not here. March 26 for us loosers. They need the extra time to have commercial "actors" off the street botch the movie with their "dubbing" (aka reading badly translated lines over the actual acting)
I'm so glad I don't have to watch the dubbed version.

Paris. And I count myself lucky because the large population of expats like myself and tourists means we do get our pick of theatres showing movies undubbed (unlike other French cities) but we still have to wait for the dubbed release to be ready to see our movies.

Runaway Jury (2003)

American legal thriller film. It's about a juror, a lawyer and a mysterious woman who stand in the way of a man trying to manipulate an explosive trial. Rewatched this yesterday and it's still great. And what a cast! Gene Hackman, John Cusack, Dustin Hoffman, Rachel Weisz, Jeremy Piven, Jennifer Beals, Bruce McGill, Bruce Davison, Cliff Curtis, Dylan McDermott, Bill Nunn, Leland Orser, Gerry Bamman, Gerry Bamman, Luis Guzmán and more. And everyone is amazing in it. Highly recommended!

Welcome to Mooseport (2004)

American political satire comedy film. It's about a recently retired US president who returns to his hometown of Mooseport, Maine and decides to run for Mayor against another local candidate. Very good cast (Gene Hackman, Ray Romano, Maura Tierney, Marcia Gay Harden, Fred Savage, Rip Torn, June Squibb, Christine Baranski and more). This is just a fun little comedy. It's not great, but it's far from bad. More importantly, this was Gene Hackman's final movie before he retired that same year. It might not be the best send-off for an actor of his caliber but people's last movies seldom are. Ultimately it's just entertaining, but nothing that will live long in the memory or is even worth revisiting. Still, can recommend.

And with that my Gene Hackman week is over. Even in weaker movies his presence was very much felt but in great movies he could really shine. Definitely one of our greatest actors. Makes it all the more devastating how he died. RIP to an absolute legend.

I just finished a double feature of See No Evil (2006) and See No Evil 2 (2014) and they are utter garbage.

Bog-standard "slasher" movies starring WWE's Kane (Glenn Jacobs) as Jacob Goodnight, a man who was basically tortured by his ultra-religious mother as a young boy and grew up to became a serial killer. The first one is about a group of 'teens' from correctional facilities who are brought in to clean up a filthy abandoned hotel over a weekend in exchange for a month off their sentences, the sequel picks up immediately after the first one despite being made 8 years later and features Jacob Goodnight going ham in a coroner/mortician/whatever lab/mortuary/whatever you call it.

The first one is bad enough, with "Jacob" basically just grunting any time he has to vocalise, but then they just HAD to go and give him dialogue in the sequel...

The Internship (2013)

American comedy film. It's about two recently laid-off salesmen who attempt to compete with much younger and more technically skilled applicants for a job at Google. It's a bit formulaic. You know the old "going back to school" trope, but in this case it's two guys in their 40s (I guess) who have lost their jobs and are starting an internship at Google among lots of younger people who know technology a lot better than them but in return they have more life experience that they can share. It's definitely not a new concept. But I wasn't really looking to watch anything deep and/or original today, so I went with this light comedy with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. And it was alright. Certainly nothing I'll ever rewatch (and it maybe should've been half an hour shorter, because with a 2 hours runtime I could definitely imagine people getting bored before it's over), but not every movie can be. I can neither recommend nor not recommend this.

Captain Nova (2021)

Dutch science fiction family film. It's about a fighter pilot who travels back in time to save the future world from environmental disaster, but a side-effect turns her young again and no-one takes her seriously. Sadly, with this one, the concept is better than the execution. The the cinematography and visual effects are good, I liked the score as well, but that's it. The acting is just decent and the writing is simply not good. Overall I can't recommend this.

Neighbors (1981)

American black comedy film. It's about a mild-mannered and conservative guy as his monotonous suburbanite life is upended by the arrival of his new neighbors, a chaotic and eccentric man and his sultry wife. I like a good black comedy, but this one just wasn't it. It's more bizarre than funny, with obnoxious characters and a bad script. It was also weird to me they cast both leads against type. Dan Aykroyd as the crazy, eccentric one and John Belushi as the sane, mild-mannered one. Plus, according to Aykroyd "most of the film's production crew was on cocaine", which sucked Belushi back into an addiction he was trying to quit, and he died of a drug overdose less than four months after the movie was released. Despite everything, I actually liked John Belushi's acting in this. After seeing a few small glimpses of his dramatic acting in this, I'm sure he would've made an incredible dramatic actor. So yeah, I think along with the movie being not very good, that fact will be stuck in my mind every time I'll think about it, so I doubt I'll ever remember it fondly. Can't recommend.

The Gorge (2025)

American science fiction romantic action film. It's about two elite snipers who are ordered to guard a deep gorge without knowing what lies inside. Very small but very good cast with most of the movie focused only on the characters Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy play in this. Sigourney Weaver plays the third most important character but we only see her for a few minutes. And then there are William Houston and Sope Dirisu who we see even less of. So yeah, it's mostly a two-person story. And to my surprise, it's very good. It has just the right amount of action, romance, eerieness, and everything you need in a movie like this. The 2h runtime is neither too long nor too short for this movie and overall I really enjoyed this movie. Highly recommended.

Smile 2 (2024)

American supernatural psychological horror film. It's about a pop star who begins to experience a series of increasingly disturbing events just as she is about to embark on tour. Sure, the novelty of the first one has worn off a bit since you kinda know what to expect, but that doesn't make this movie any worse. It's still different enough to the first one. So overall I can very much recommend it.

Used Cars (1980)

American satirical black comedy film. It's about a devious salesman who's working for a good-natured but unsuccessful used-car dealer but his principal rival who's located directly across the street is scheming to take over his lot. This is a lot of fun. Good cast (Kurt Russell, Jack Warden (in a double-role), Gerrit Graham, Michael McKean, Al Lewis and even an interesting little cameo by Dick Miller). It's just very entertaining. Overall I can recommend it.

Mind Game (2004)

Japanese animation movie, I've already seen some other projects by Masaaki Yuasa like his take on Devilman (Devilman Crybaby) and Tatami Galaxy and loved his crazy style, this is his directorial debut in a movie and it was legit on another level of crazyness, hard to explain, mixed technique with actual actors faces and swap in animation techniques, there's not a straighforward explanation through the movie, it's left to the viewer. Personally I think the message is about not dodging choices in life and living life to its fullest. Still have to fully "get it" but i really liked it, would recommend it if you like weird animation, and if you are ready to get stunned by animation while being confused by what it's happening.

Kneecap (2024)

Irish-British comedy-drama film. It's about the rise of an Irish rap trio as they challenge cultural norms and advocate for the Irish language. This was surprisingly good. It's the fictional origin story of a real-life hip-hop trio and even though I've never heard of them before (nor do I really listen to that genre anyway) I definitely enjoyed this one. The band members are playing themselves and considering they're not actually actors their performances were very good. Overall this was very good. Highly recommended.

American comedy-drama film. It's about two couples who are determined to embrace complete openness after a weekend of emotional honesty at a retreat. Robert Culp, Natalie Wood, Elliott Gould and Dyan Cannon play very well off each other. It's definitely a product of its time with the sexual revolution of the 60s and all but I think it's still very good and definitely worth watching. Can recommend.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (2024)

New Zealand-Japanese-American anime fantasy film. It's about the legendary Helm Hammerhand, King of Rohan, who unintentionally starts a war when the neighboring Dunlendings propose a marriage to his daughter. I enjoyed this. It wasn't perfect but if you've ever wondered why Helm's Deep is called that, this movie gives the backstory to it. The voice cast was good (Brian Cox, Miranda Otto, Shaun Dooley, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan (but obviously not as their established characters, since this is set around 200 years before Bilbo Baggins finds the One Ring) and even Sir Christopher Lee (using an archival recording of an alternate take of a scene in The Hobbit film trilogy (with his late widow's permission)) and I'm spoiler-tagging this because he does, in fact, play Saruman in this. The animation was good, but not groundbreaking, the story was interesting. Overall this definitely will not be regarded as highly as the LotR movies, but it's better than RoP. I'd say it's more than "just watchable". I can recommend it.
