The Flight of the Phoenix (1965)
American survival drama film. It's about a small group of men struggling to survive their aircraft's emergency landing in the Sahara. This is a great movie with a cast full of heavy-hitters (James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Hardy Krüger, Peter Finch, Ernest Borgnine, Ian Bannen, George Kennedy and more) who delivered outstanding performances. Its 142 minute runtime really flies past. Overall I can highly recommend this great movie!

It's about an Afghanistan war veteran who comes back home and has to repair her relationships with the two most important people in her life: her grandfather, a Vietnam war veteran who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer, and her best friend Zoe who she served, is dead... and is still literally with her.
It's a drama about loss and PTSD but it's also a buddy comedy with a lot of heart. The cast is great (Sonequa Martin-Green, Ed Harris, Morgan Freeman, Natalie Morales) and while the movie's message is important, it never feels manipulative.
The writer-director is himself a veteran who serves as a paratrooper and directed several documentaries about veterans and vets have been hired to play themselves in various support group scenes and other scenes.

It is. And I actually thought I'd seen it already because I saw another movie with a dead best friend hanging around played by Natalie Morales but that was a different one altogether, more of a comedy with an alien taking the form of a dead friend in I'm Totally Fine. A lot more fun and not quite as powerful but also a nice watch.
Not to add more :P

Flight of the Phoenix (2004)
American survival drama film. It's about a group of people who survive an aircraft crash in a desert and must build a new aircraft out of the old one to escape. On its own it might even be good, but compared to the original it's just... not. Obviously very similar, but some scenes and dialogue are just copied and not even changed, and some things that are done differently are done worse than in the original. Good cast (Dennis Quaid, Giovanni Ribisi, Tyrese Gibson, Miranda Otto, Hugh Laurie, Jared Padalecki, Tony Curran and more) but they cast of the original was leagues above. Overall, if you haven't seen the original this might be good. But if you have, definitely don't bother watching this one. Can't recommend.

The Sisters Brothers (2018)
French-American-Spanish period drama Western film. It's about two notorious assassin brothers as they chase after two men who have banded together to search for gold. This is surprisingly good and the cast (John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix as the brothers, Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed as the guys searching for gold, and others like Rutger Hauer, Carol Kane, Richard Brake and more) delivering very good performances all around. I'm not the biggest fan of Westerns but I enjoyed this one. Can recommend.

Spieleabend/Blame the Game (2024)
German comedy movie. It's about a young man who meets his new girlfriend's friends for the first time at their regular game night, putting him under pressure to make a good impression. Watched this yesterday. At first I thought it might be a remake of Game Night (2018), which I thought was great, so my expectations were relatively low for this one. But apart from the basic premise of people having a game night and some unexpected stuff happening there these two movies were very different from each other. This one is just some light entertainment but it doesn't try to be more than that. Overall I think it's a decent one-time watch and for that reason I can recommend it.

Moving On (2022)
American comedy-drama film. It's about two old friends who reconnect at a funeral and decide to get revenge on the widower who messed with them decades before. Very good cast (Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Malcolm McDowell, Richard Roundtree and more) who deliver very good performances, but I'm not surprised Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin play so well off each other here, considering that they've starred together in a popular Netflix series for 7 seasons and almost 100 episodes at that point. Overall this was less of a comedy than I was expecting but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Can recommend.

Sound of My Voice (2011)
American psychological thriller film. It's about two documentary filmmakers who attempt to infiltrate a cult who worships a woman who claims to be from the future. This is surprisingly very good. Brit Marling is great, but she usually is. The concept is interesting and due to the fact that it's never actually explained wether she really is from the future or not (and there are things pointing to both outcomes) you can come to your own conclusion, which is a thing I tend to like in movies. It's well paced and has a good runtime at just 85 minutes, so it doesn't overstay its welcome. Overall I thought this was very good and can recommend it.

I loved that one! Maybe even more than Another Earth. I did watch Another Earth before The OA though and Sound of My Voice after.
Similarities with the characters and narrative of The OA are interesting but it's definitely not the same story. Brit Marling is so talented it's almost unfair to other storytellers.

Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
American independent coming-of-age comedy film. It's about a nerdy high-school student who deals with several dilemmas: befriending an immigrant who wants to be class president, awkwardly pursuing a romance with a fellow student, and living with his quirky family. You wouldn't expect this to be a good movie and it kinda isn't. But then again, it kinda is. I don't know how that's possible, it just is. The movie is endlessly quotable and has tons of memorable and fascinating characters. No wonder it became such a cult classic. However, I don't know if I would've liked this movie more or less if I'd've watched it when it came out. But I'm glad I watched it now and I can very much recommend it.

Hypnotic (2023)
American psychological mystery sci-fi action drama thriller film. It's about a detective who investigates a mystery involving his missing daughter and a secret government program about people with hypnotic powers. The premise is very interesting, but the execution is a bit lackluster. This movie was also too fast-paced. There's a lot of story to cram into just 94 minutes, it would've benefitted from another 30 minutes or so. The cast was very good (Alice Braga, Ben Affleck, William Fichtner, Jeff Fahey, Jackie Earle Haley and more). This movie's biggest fault is that there's just too much to tell in a short amount of time. Apart from that I actually enjoyed it. When it was released I saw the trailer for it pretty much before every movie I watched at the cinema around that time. But since then I haven't really noticed anything about it. The other day I noticed it's on Netflix so I decided to watch it today. Overall I can recommend it, even if it didn't quite live up to its potential.

Fat Man and Little Boy (1989)
American epic historical war drama film. It's about the Manhattan Project. This is pretty much Oppenheimer (2023) but not made by Christopher Nolan. I get that it's about the same historical event, but I did recognize some specific things I've also seen in Oppenheimer (2023), for example the "we're gonna ignite the atmosphere", which of course could've been something those people actually said, but still. The cast is very good (Paul Newman, John Cusack, Laura Dern, John C. McGinley, Natasha Richardson, Clark Gregg, Ed Lauter, Todd Field, Kevin Tighe and more). Overall I enjoyed this and it's a good thing to get a different perspective on a historical event like that, even after a recent blockbuster was made about it. Can very much recommend.

The possibility of igniting the atmosphere of the earth was an actual thing, and there was a concern that the first test might do it. Edward Teller, one of the key scientists in the Manhattan Project, noted in 1942 that the atomic test would create temperatures hotter than temperatures in the sun, and could create conditions that would begin a fusion chain reaction in the atmosphere's nitrogen (I think). Most of the team didn't think that was very likely, but it is a little chilling that they went ahead with the tests without being certain one way or another.

Grimsby (2016)
British-American spy action comedy film. It's about a top spy who is forced to team up with his football hooligan brother for a new assignment. Well, this is definitely quite dark and vulgar, but if you don't mind either of those things, it's really entertaining. Basically the lovechild of The Gentlemen (2019) and Brüno (2009). I think it's very funny, has a very good cast (Sacha Baron Cohen, Mark Strong, Isla Fisher, Rebel Wilson, Gabourey Sidibe, Penélope Cruz, Barkhad Abdi, David Harewood, Johnny Vegas, Scott Adkins and more), and is just all around a good time. And it's under 90 minutes, so it doesn't overstay it's welcome. Overall I can recommend it, although it's definitely not for everyone.

Yesterday I saw two bangers.
The Forest Clown (2025), 2/10, so very boring. It's not one of those hilariously bad horror movies made in UK, you know the ones that are starring the same actors/actresses and you go "Oooh, aah! It's the old woman from the curse of humpty dumpty/spider in the attic!", this was more or less everyones first movie and it showed.
Night of the Dead Sorority Babes (2025), 4/10. It made me laugh a couple of times with its stupid humour, I should've guessed which way the movie was going when there was so many boobs just smiling at me in the first 3 minutes. But I mean, I take any and all horny LGBTQ horror sleaze fest, but hearing my own name being said that often in a movie gave me the ick.

Black Bag (2025)
If Nick and Nora Charles, of the vintage Thin Man movies, were spies rather than wisecracking socialite detectives, they might be George and Kathryn, the married British espionage couple in Steven Soderbergh's new picture starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett. "Black Bag" is their term for where things they can't discuss at home are lodged: oh honey, I'm on a business flight in the morning, won't be home until Thursday. Where am I going? That's "black bag" - can't tell you. It's a terrific device in a terrific film, and it's wonderful to watch Soderbergh, working with a smart canny script by David Koepp, power through a complex story in the company of a cast of well-chosen actors. I'll leave the plot to people seeing the movie, but suffice it to say that the conspiracy probably wasn't what you expected and it's a joy to watch things straighten out in the end. No car chases, no pitched fight scenes, and add one killer dinner party. Highly recommended, as good as everyone says. And all of it done in just 93 minutes!

Here we go, I'll start.
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10
