I played it on 360. I really liked the art and I also thought Nilin was a very sympathetic character.
What annoyed me most was that the most interesting part of the game (the memory "remixes") were so few and I thought combat sucked complete ass. It's like the developers poured their heart and souls into creating a very believable "Neo-Paris" with a relatively gripping story and dropped the ball on most of the game mechanics.

Haven't played the game myself. But I watched Totalbiscuit's WTF video last night, and he said almost exactly what you wrote here.
The combo creating thing seems like it could have been cool, but as he pointed out, doesn't look like it's well made.
I watched the video mainly because I was interested about the memory remix thing, but it's not the core gameplay mechanic apparently. So it was just mentioned but not shown. Was slightly disappointed about that.

I agree that some of the combos didn't actually do anything after you've unlocked them and the system itself didn't make much sense ( basically you are just unlocking more buttons to customize three different combos, new unlocked combos are not stronger than the old ones.)
But idea was great and the combat part of that system was cool :) I did my combos so that the shortest one (three X-button/hit-button one) was my desperate quick heal, second one I used when I wanted to get my cooldowns down quickly and the longest one was pure damage (was kinda frustrating because most of the monsters died before I even finished that combo..) .

There are four combos (3, 5, 6, and 8). The longer combos are definitely stronger than the shorter ones if you set them up properly (eg. using Chain Pressens). You also get bonus experience (PMP) for completing the 6 and 8 move combos, so it's not always best to use them for pure damage.
I quite liked the combat. Though it was repetitive in the same way the Batman: Arkham combat was, I was never bored by it.

The Memory Remixes are not a "core gameplay mechanic," but they're huge as far as the story goes, which is probably why they weren't shown in the video. There are four total, all of which are crucial to the story, but especially the latter two. So much show that even showing or talking about them a little bit would be highly spoilerific.
I was disappointed at first that there were only four, as I did think they'd play a bigger role, but upon further inspection, it may have actually been a good thing, as they never felt gimmicky or overdone.

I really enjoyed the game and definitely recommend it to anyone who likes linear story-driven games. Visually, it's one of the best games I've ever played. There's so much detail in the environments

So, thoughts? :)
I just finished this game and I must say that I'm happy that I kept playing even though it felt little boring at the beginning.
I loved the story, there was some quite well written characters. And the way they portrayed Nilin in game (voice acting, expressions, animations) were great.
Couple of things that I didn't like however:
Game feels like it's constantly holding your hand and telling you what to do. There is no exploration or free roaming, you can't even climb up wherever you like, but the game is telling you where to go.
Controls were kinda clumsy, (tried both keyboard and controller, liked gamepad more. ) didn't really like how the camera was acting (tho I got used to it after a couple of hours)
Game was bit too repetitive and short.
But as I like cinematic and story-heavy games, I'd say I really enjoyed playing this game. :)
