I am guessing you entered the code while viewing your card... there is a field that says "Voucher code". This is NOT the place to enter the code. Click the button to purchase and on the next page there is a field where you can enter a "Coupon code"... This is where you enter the code.
It is a bit confusing to have two place where one might enter a code! :)
