Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition question

How mandatory is a fight stick? Could I make do with a controller? I haven't played fighting games for a damn long time, but I'm suddenly interested and want to try it out.

Any thoughts on the game itself? Reviews seem to say it's a good improvement on SF4.

I cannot play SF4 period...i have no idea why. Gimme Guilty gear,blazblue,KoF,tekken whatever but i cannot play SF4 a lick. That being said i use the controller for every fighting game and do just fine,

Yeah, I'm most comfortable with Soul Calibur myself. Played a hell of a lot of it on the Gamecube (SC2).

I played it just fine with the 360 controller, the d-pad was annoying though but nothing horrible.
