Doesn't mean a thing if there is risk of it going away. Sorry.

Not really. Eventhough Steam says they will NOT help with such things, they apparently do that. Some time ago my Friend bought CS:GO for 2 or 3 keys and guess what... The game has been revoked. He wrote to Steam support, provided some info and got his stuff back eventhough the guy who sold him CS:GO didn't have keys in his inventory anymore.
So, yeah - Valve actually helps with such trade scams and revoked games.
And remember! It's better to try/ask than give up/do nothing!

Unfortunately as everyone can easily bypass it by sending gifts to email address...

The trade lock is just there so they have an excuse for not helping you.
When you trade for a gift that gets revoked, they give you back the items you traded, always. So in the past you could do suspicious-ass trades like CS:GO for 1 key, and when it gets revoked, Support just dupes your keys and returns them to you. Risk-free. Of course this introduces duped items into the system and devalues them.
Now they can just say "oh it was a gift, and you traded outside the trading window so too bad. gg no re"

I think most credit cards allow you to charge back within 90 days.

Was just asking myself...since I got a gift from a suspicious trade (the trader disappeared, and some say the gifts they traded from him have been revoked), I'm unsure about trading/selling/gifting/activating it. It had 30 days lock as usual, so I thought it was better to wait.
As far as you know, after these 30 days the gift is safe from revoking or that actually doesn't mean a thing? If it doesn't...well, the 30 day lock has no purpose.
