For the Quakecon 2021, iD/Bethesda released new update to Quake 1, with new expansion and updated visuals. It should be free for previous owners, including all the expansions. It looks like they've updated original package and delisted expansions according to steamdb. Updated package is priced at 10 Euro.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2310/QUAKE/
https://steamdb.info/app/2310/

Question is, if we don't own Q on Steam and get it retroactively (the older key) from 3rd party, do we get access to the updated version? As you can get Q1 for less than 2e with Quakecon deals all around. <- Looks like this is possible (thx xitau)

(update) Looks like most of the 3rd party stores caught up and bumped full price to 9.99e, some retained original 70% off Quakecon deal, so it's around 3e. → https://isthereanydeal.com/game/quake/info/

If you've grabbed the Q1 on Bethesda Launcher for free, or bought it there before - Bethesda Launcher Q1 owners also get this update free of charge.

So there is no way to play the old version for those who owned it?

You will be able to play them normally, just clicking "go to store" on them will move you to Steam main page

Yes there is. Launch the game and it will ask you which version you wanna play. Also, you will find all the files in the folders if you wanna use a source port.

from Bethesda launcher you goes to settings - beta - original - it removes new version and download old. then when you choose default it loads new again and delete old...
also for my Windows 7 new version starts only with Win7 compatibility mode on!

Launching the game from the steam client, not from the shortcut (steam://rungameid/2310) on your desktop you get this options:

  • Play Quake
  • Play Quake (original)
  • Play Scourge of Armagedon (original)
  • Play Dissolution of Eternity (original)

Someone like Night Dive needs to get the rights to Malice for Quake. That's a really good total conversion. Great soundtrack too.

Never hurts to ask them if they might restock, they got a very nice friendly support.
You got a no, but could get a yes, something like that. ;)

Although with many having bought Quake it might not be in this case.

Damn, I wish I checked this thread before I bought Quake 1 only (1.35€ on 2game with their discount code). Including Quake 4 that is a pretty damn good value bundle. The game didn't receive a lot of love back then but IMO it was a really good game (I mean, this was Raven Software after all).

What was the exact name of the package when you activated it? Because there is just one "Quake Collection" pack and it does not include Quake 4.

Great game and runs sweeter than the original version (which ran amazeballs anyway). Achievements make it tempting to run through again after all these years. Splitscreen? wow.

Looks like Bethesda has promptly killed all Quake Collection sales ahead of their expiration dates, and removed Quake Collection from the store.

"Previous owners of Quake on Steam will automatically receive the new version with a free download. It may already be updated by the time you read this! Additionally, if you didn't own Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity on Steam, you will also be granted access to the original versions of those in-game"

=> This means if you only have the original Quake 1 in library before, now with this update you will be given both 2 delisted expansions of Quake 1 for free, right ?

The game also has remote play function and it does work - you can play split-screen up to 4 players.
I guess steam still doesn't support remote keyboard+mouse for each player so gamepad vs mouse players may decide who is better now your friend must use gamepad to play coop with you.
Probably it would be ok to play on consoles.
