sorry to head that, but we all have been there. backup is really important if in your data there is something you actually care of. i recently lost 1y of data from my professional laptop, it was stolen and my backup flawed. now I have double backup, local and cloudy.

Sorry for your loss...
Dumb question, but was it internal or external?

Managed to sizzle a 1TB WD not long ago while assembling my secondary PC.
Lucky me - that drive contained mainly games for emulators + was backed up recently ... AND had still 1.5 of 5y warranty.
Did sent it to WD support and got a new one, with no questions asked and free of charge other than postage cost to send it. o/
Files that matter i'd keep on at least 2 Drives, 2 USB's and maybe SD-Cards or DVD's.
Keeping track of HDD Health with (HD Tune, Crystal Disk, HD Sentinel) is for most parts
useless as its usually obvious when the drives getting weird (noise, performance) + sudden RIP.
edit.: highly recommended some Backup-Tool - saves a shit ton of time and space to get the backups done (counting myself on
Acronis True Image since years - current Ver. even enables you to migrate your OS Drive+Win-License to a completely different PC)

If it's not detecting but still you hear it spinning up without weird noises and clicking and ticking when you turn on your pc, than it might be that it's only something electrically, so you can find exact the same hdd and replace circuit board, and your all data will be back.

my last one suddenly couldn't be "initialized" by windows. it always wants to format it. still trying to find out if i can access anything.
contents: gaming videos, games, downloads, personal files (luckily backuped in the cloud), and the worst: game saves. i'll never finish Witcher 3

I lost all my personal work and games.
Always back up your stuff.
You can just download media again. The vast majority of people don't have enough personal files to outstrip free cloud storage options.

Maybe you'll find a solution to recover your stuff.

Rest in peace, beloved hard disk. I never had a sudden disk death, but I know how much it sucks when the disk start failing. You can lose your cpu, your gpu, your ram... and you can replace it or maybe take advantage and get better hardware, but not with the disk, because files. Losing personal data and things with a lot of work really sucks, I formatted my disks without backups in the past or forgot to backup X file.
I'm glad I now use MegaSync to make backups for my personal files. Try to use some cloud for backups. Dropbox is another option.
If you lost something not really important that you invest hours on it,at least you didn't lose the experience to make it better.

So, my HDD just died. It is not even detected.
Backup? Haha, yeah... I lost all my personal work and games.
Enjoy this moment with me and have a giveaway.Good news!
After some reboots, I managed to make the hard drive to be recognized by the system.
I was trying the ddrescue tool and Hakimodo came to my aid.
He realized that there were no errors in the partition I was trying to clone, then he helped me with smarter ways to salvage the data. :D
Other partition is really damaged. If I try to clone it or just copy data, after a while, it freezes the system and BIOS won't detect it.
The important thing is that I was able to recover my work, my porn and some of my games.
