Good day everyone

I did try read through the FAQ to ensure this is allowed. If I missed something and this should be taken down, then please inform me and I shall do so ASAP.

For working purposes, I need the Microsoft Office Suite and OneDrive storage. The plans are so mightily expensive that I was hoping to get on someone else's plan. I realise it is a bit risky to ask online, but I am not sure who else to ask and my finances require me to enquire lol.
The family plans are good deals if you can manage to fill it up with people. Alternatively, if I had to buy a plan, would there be any people interested in joining for a fee? Not sure if the plan differs in pricing depending on country, but it's about $110 where I'm from.

Thanks everyone!

EDIT: Thank you to everyone for your input and great suggestions. I value your time and energy put into helping me. All the best going forward :)

Im not interested in the family plan, but i just want to make sure, do you really need it to be on microsoft? If you need suites just for the sheet, docs, and ppt, there are other free alternatives like libreoffice. For one drive, i didnt find a cheaper option for the same size, but if you dont need 6TB, you can opt for another service like google drive instead.

Microsoft would work best. I had looked into open source alternatives, including LibreOffice. However, the people I collaborate with and those who revise my work use the Microsoft Office suite. It feels like a massive pain to try and go a different route.

The family plan only gives 1TB per person. For the time being 100GB would actually be sufficient. I do have some Google Drive storage so I may just try get a package for the office suite and then use google drive instead of getting onedrive. The office packages can be quite expensive too however.

Thank you for the response :)

If it’s for work, then you should really be contacting your employer.
If it’s for a home business, then you’re in a bad financial state to start with.
I would try any of the many free office alternatives, and Google drive, or similar free cloud service.

I am actually a student. The university has implemented a new system this year, along with numerous issues. One of the issues is with Microsoft Office, including the fact that I'm limited to 1GB of OneDrive storage. This has been quite a hindrance when it comes to doing any sort of work. So, I just got a bit fed up and looking for an alternative. Perhaps it will get fixed the moment I get a solution, but it has been so long, and I am not keen to continue storing everything locally.

Thank you for your suggestion :)

If you're a student, take a lookt at options in that regard. Some Universities do have plans that cover all students, and for the time being, you can just use it. Or MS had/has? student plans as well, much cheaper, and could help you. usually have to prove you're actually a student, but other thatn that, price was quite cheap.

The university does have the office suite with 100GB OneDrive (or at least they did before this year), but there is numerous problems they have faced since implementing some new campus-wide system. My monies is even low because they haven't paid out my bursary this year yet lol. Funding myself this year so far, but got it sorted I believe so should get something perhaps tomorrow or the day after :P

Perhaps I'm a bit dramatic and should still just try get it sorted through the university. Frustration can make you lose your mind a bit I guess.

That is a bummer. Did you register your student account with your edu-mail yourself?

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/products/office

^- when our students or employees/lecturers register there with their edu account a MS account, they'll get automatically a 1TB onedrive (just checked when logging in myself) + online MS365 possibilites + desktop licenses for MS365 (these are limited and new people have to wait until people deregister)

And i don't think, that this is an actual offer from our university, it's just an offer from MS. Though i'm not sure, if we are paying or have some contract - as far as i know, we don't. But i can ask tomorrow, i'm working in the tech department.

The most important part is, that your edu e-mail is recognized and your student status is automatically verified.

I've been here for quite some years already, so the error is unlikely to be on my side as I've not changed anything and using the account given to me by the university. Their system has even erased my former degree somehow lol. I would guess it's there somewhere in the database, but gone to me lol.

As I said to Russell, perhaps I'm just being a bit dramatic. Almost April already, but I will continue to try get it sorted and hopefully come right.

Thanks once again timmy!

For the office suite, just use - snip -. I use that all the time for Windows and Office. Works like a charm.

OneDrive i dunno. IMO the client is cancer and trash. The only nice thing is the seamless transistion into Windows and Office. Don't know how you would use OneDrive.

But i would prefer an owncloud instance over OneDrive any day. Selfhosted or rented one.

Seems like OwnCloud can also be integrated into the Office suite:

For free Google Drive is really good, but you don't have that much storage..

Owncloud looks quite good actually. Will need to investigate further. Thank you for the information!

My pleasure! We use it at work and i'm really satisfied with it. Has also ton of other functions like: contact sync, tasks, calendar ical sync etc.

Hope you got my hint about the office suite, i just snipped it, since it's somewhat a grey area :>

Btw., there is also Nextcloud. You should maybe look into Nextcloud vs. Owncloud and see what suits your needs better.

They have both their pros and cons. I think one is a fork of the other. We use nextcloud at work, doing well so far.

I don't think you need the family plan as a student. I'd rather find another workaround.

If your university have the office suite, you can just use it for license the office. Web version is also alternative as it is free, flexible, and takes low space.
If the one drive limited to 1GB, you can make personal one drive for free to get 5 GB then attached to the office. As for me, 5 GB is enough for office-kind documents only. You can also attach multiple one drive accounts if needed.
As for other file projects, I'd rather use Google Drive as it has 15 GB free. Not much as it is shared with gmail, photos, and android backup, but I somehow can manage it.

But if you really work a lot in media (as backup, or working online) and need that much, you may consider to get cloud storage. If you cannot use the univ license but also need cloud storage, the family plan may work best.

My university also set our limit from 100 GB to 0 in late 2024. I haven't used it since the limitation, but it seems they set it to 25 GB now. Maybe check yours?

Good luck

At the moment my work files total ~30GB. It's still a 1GB limit as it stands, but I'm going to keep trying to see if they can change something, especially considering I'm a postgrad student. Thanks for the suggestions though, I appreciate your time :)

Aside from grey market accounts or shared accounts, you could do this:

For the Office desktop apps - you can buy Office 2019 for about USD$30. That is a one time payment for lifetime license -- no ongoing payments required.

Then you can subscribe to Microsoft 365 Basic for USD$2/month or $20/year. That will give you 100 GB of OneDrive/email storage plus the web-versions of Office apps.

I was actually thinking of going this route. Even if just temporarily until I can try sort something more permanent out. Atm I am just using my limited 5GB on my personal to ensure files I am working on currently remain saved. Thank you very much for your comment paul, much appreciated! :)
