I am sorry for my friend's English, he is from Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, and they do not have many opportunities to learn English there.
Now, about your questions. For him it was about 2 months, but he is still working on it. He was participating in advanced game design courses before starting creating the game. I guess, he knows how to make basic stuff, but still, there are many things to improve. It depends on how much time you are able to spend for your game, if you will work on it 24/7 and your goal will not be unrealistic, about 3-4 months, but if you can spend only some hours per week, I guess, years, but of course, it depends on your programming level and game design level.

I will check this game out. It reminds me of another game that right now I can't recall, but it is quite popular with unpredictable puzzles that kill you at every step. They are very stressful at times as far as I am aware.
