Vavle have said they want to move PC gaming to Linux. Valve do run experiments in the Steam store.
I wouldn't put it past them to release a title everyone wants as a Linux exclusive just to see how people react. They can always port it to windows later.

Are the Half-Life games that good?
I've never played them but shooting games aren't my forte, unless it's something like the Bioshock or Mass Effect series.

Half-Life and Half-Life 2 were huge when they came out. I'm not sure you will experience the same intense joy if you play them, but they are/were pretty good. Even if HL1 graphics may discourage you, you should definitely try Half-Life 2 - it still looks great! =)

Well, if you want to draw comparisons between Bioshock and Half-Life - both are good examples of integrating gameplay and storyline. To the point where I'd say that Half-life pioneered a lot that Bioshock perfected.

Well, it depends on how you look at it.
If you look at it from the perspective of when they were released, they consistently raised the bar for what was expected from an FPS, so, yes, they were excellent.
If you look at it in comparison to today's FPS games, the Half-Life series was focused more on the single-player experience, featuring an involved story that continued throughout the entire series. In this respect, Half-Life and Bioshock are similar.
If you look at the games through the lens of someone familiar with the franchise, the "spin off" games (Opposing Force, Blue Shift) suffered because they were formulaic. They offered a different perspective on the main storyline, but the mechanics and puzzles were "more of the same." You could literally predict what was going to happen next.
If you are interested in playing the Half-Life series now, because it's a cool story, I would recommend only the following games:
1) Half-Life - Either the Black Mesa game (Half-Life remade in modern Source) or Half-Life Source.
2) Half-Life 2
3) Half-Life 2: Episode 1
4) Half-Life 2: Episode 2
I'm not sure if you'd be interested in multiplayer as it's almost entirely deathmatch. True, HL deathmatch is a ton of fun because it's more cerebral than most other games, but it's still very much a "twitch" affair.

You'll notice very little improvements in HL:S over original HL, so i'll say to go with original one... it's classic everyone should at least try. If you want replay, then choose HL:S. Also, don't forget to play both expansion for HL.
I completed every HL game recently, they're still on top of the FPS genre, no matter how old they are...

Tomorrow/today should be interesting.
We will get lots of fake game news.

Breaking NDA guys but I can confirm this as legit. Been alpha testing it for a year now. Great game but be warned it's linux only so you better switch to Ubuntu if you wanna play. :)
